  • Also called as "Bridegroom Rice".
  • It is grown predominantly in Tamil Nadu.
  • A man needs to win a contest to marry a woman. Is it astonishing? Yes this is how our ancestors got married. They had many competitions. The prominent one among them is "Stone Lifting Competition"(Illavatta Kal). Illavatta Stone, most of the present generation doesn't know about it. Illavatta Stone is a spherical stone weighing around 100 to 120 kg. But lifting a 120 kg spherical stone is a difficult task. Then how did our ancestors lift the "Illavatta Kal"? They used to eat "Mapillai Samba" rice for a period of 48 days, along with the daily exercise. This gave them the strength to lift the stone.
