Introduction

        In India, we had 1,50,000 lakhs of traditional rice varieties. Presently, we have only 500 rice varieties. These 500 rice varieties has been restored only by the efforts of Nammalvar, Nel Jeyaraman and many other genuine farmers. We need to restore our traditional rice varieties. Rice varieties which are selling today are abysmal to the health. Our traditional rice varieties have lots of medicinal properties, it can cure many diseases. Every traditional rice varieties have unique advantages. For instance, some of them are pest and disease resistant (Sigappu Kuruvikar), they provide fodder and roofing material (Kullakar), they are suited for specific food preparations (Kallimadiyan for Manapparai Murukku), they provide energy and stamina (Mappillai Samba), they are flood and drought resistant (Samba Mosanam and Vadan Samba), they have specific medicinal properties (Pitchavari for curing diarrhoea), some varieties are useful for pregnant mothers and lactating mothers (Navara and Neelan Samba), some are suitable for saline soil (Kalarpalai).

         We can cultivate the traditional rice varieties in any kind of climatic conditions, unlike present rices. Every farmer must cultivate our traditional rice. And even we must eat traditional rice. We need to spread the awareness of the invaluable benefits of our traditional rice varieties. Many of our traditional rice varieties were a medicine to many diseases. In Tamil, there is a famous proverb called as "உணவே மருந்து" (Unave Marunthu), which means "Food is Medicine". Our traditional food is our medicine.
